• 1 cup butter or margarine
  • 1 (16 oz) pkg (2 1/4 cup packed) brown sugar
  • Dash of salt
  • 1 cup light corn syrup
  • 1 (14 oz) can sweetened condensed milk (1 1/4 cup)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

  1. Generously butter a 9x9x2 inch pan; set aside. In a heavy 3 quart saucepan, melt the butter or margarine. Add sugar and salt. Stir thoroughly. Stir in corn syrup. Gradually add sweetened condensed milk; stir constantly.
  2. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, to 245° (firm-ball stage-- takes about 15 to 20 minutes. Mixture should boil gently over entire surface).
  3. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla. Pour into buttered pan. When cool, cut into squares with a wet, sharp knife. Wrap each piece in clear plastic wrap or wax paper. Makes about 2 1/2 pounds.
